A True Story of Teenage Strength and Love.......
by Christine Power !

Once Upon A Time........

   It was  Jan. 13,  2007. After whelping a litter of two on Jan 8th my husband and I felt we needed " a break" for a night all  to ourselves in Newfounlands big city, St.John's. Now we have three teenagers of our own here at home and one exchange student from Korea. We did have a second litter due in a weeks time so we did the temperature check and all seemed great for a night away; after all we were only 50 min. away. So off we went,  leaving our four teens home Three boys ages 16, 16, 14 and our daughter Jessica who is 12.

    At 12:30 pm we called home as we liked to check to see that all our teens were in the house , plus check on the puppies and Nikita our expecting mom. Jessica said all was great, all boys were home, she was sleeping in our bedroom with puppies and Nikita was in bed with her. Great, we could go to sleep and head home in morning. Plus the weather was not nice it was freezing rain.

    Now mind you this wonderful new hotel had a nice feature -  all long distance calls were  free. Wow that was nice. Boy, will they be sorry. LOL

    At 1:30 am the phone rang in our room... oh boy;  Jessica was  yelling that one puppy arrived under our bed (silly little buggger: the puppy , not Jessica). Nikita is now in the whelping box with the other two puppies from Zena's litter, and one puppy was now on it's way  out. Jeremy was screaming , we are on speaker phone, " what do we do"? Luciano who is 16 was throwing up in my garbage bucket in my bedroom, and Woo Jin from Korea exited stage right to his room. (smart kid)

    Jessica took over ... " shut up : get face cloths, scissors , dental floss and pass me the first puppy; Jeremy you write down times of arrivial and  boy or girl; Luciano,  you pass me the supplies as I need them"
    Wow was I Impressed. Over the next three hours Jessica whelped 6 puppies;  four boys and two girls.The  boys set up second whelping box and transfered newborns to the  new whelping box and, between some choice words I rather not print and a screaming Jessica, with the help of her two brothers whelped 6 beautiful healthly Minaiature Long Haired Dachshunds. We hung up the phone at 4:45 am Jan 14 . At 9 am we checked out to a clerk who had to ask if  we had any problems as they noticed we were on the phone all night.

     On our arrival home we found three very tired teens and one new mother with her 6 beautiful babies sleeping in a nice clean whelping box with heating pad. Zena was on other side of room with her  two 6 day old girls and a  garbage bag full of dirty face cloths and a tray of whelping supplies .

    Luciano our newest son from Mexico said on our arrivial
" Jessica is going to be a wonderful Doctor, she was calm and kept her cool through the whole thing, I just do not want to witness any of this again, I was soooo sick"

    Jeremy our 14 year old son, said Jessica was great. She broke the sacs, suctioned the mouths, checked the palets, showed me where to tie the cords and tied the cords, she even picked up the ugly placentas and placed them in garbage. Mom it was gross but cool. She yelled to us to do stuff and keep records. NOW,  mom what do we get for doing this????? :}

People ....to say we are proud would be understatement.

Jessica got her Reward and the boys too.

Whelping is and can be a challenge for the best of us breeders, but I can say deep from the heart that my teens are up for the challenge.
